Killeen in our records: a busy winter in 2022, and the roofs since.

Killeen is served from our Central Texas office in Temple, 21 miles east, on 254-293-0061.

Our AccuLynx records hold 241 jobs at Killeen addresses, 42 of them finished. Of those, 23 were full roofs, the first in 2023 and the most recent in July 2026; 20 of them came in 2026, nearly all were insurance jobs, and every one was on a home.

The busiest stretch in our Killeen records ran from December 2022 through March 2023, the winter after spotters reported 1.75-inch hail in Killeen on October 24, 2022 and inch-plus stones a mile west of the city on November 11. Few of the records from that winter became finished jobs; most of the Killeen roofs on our books came later, in 2026. Next door, Harker Heights has 27 roofs in our records.

Most of our Killeen jobs are on the south side of the city. ZIP 76542 carries the most job records and roofs by a distance, followed by 76549 to the southwest and 76543 to the northeast. By the Census, all three reach well beyond the city limits, into the country to the south and toward Copperas Cove and Nolanville.

Your town. Your weather. Your roof.

Dated hail and wind reports logged near Killeen by trained spotters for the National Weather Service. Storm history is a reason to inspect, never a diagnosis.

Since September 18, 2023, trained spotters reporting to the National Weather Service logged 3 days with hail of 1 inch or more and 3 days with damaging wind within 10 miles of Killeen; the largest hail was 1.25 in on May 1, 2025. Storm history is a reason to inspect, never a diagnosis.

Moderate hail in town, and bigger stones just outside it.

From the National Weather Service’s spotter reports within ten miles of Killeen, and the big storms just beyond.

Over the decade since September 18, 2016, the ten miles around Killeen have seen 16 days of hail an inch across or larger and 11 days of damaging wind. In the ten years to September 2026, Killeen’s hail count sat about in the middle of the towns on our site outside Dallas-Fort Worth: Temple, twenty miles east, logged more hail days, and Round Rock more still. Inside the ten miles, the stones topped out at 1.75 inches, in Killeen itself on October 24, 2022 and, most recently, five miles northwest of the city on March 16, 2023.

The bigger stones have fallen just outside that circle. On May 1, 2025, spotters reported 4.5-inch hail a mile west-southwest of Copperas Cove, about eleven miles west-northwest of Killeen, the day after 2.5-inch stones in the same town. On April 12, 2022, 5.5-inch hail came down near Salado, fourteen miles southeast, and on April 9, 2024, 4.25 inches fell near Briggs, nineteen miles west-southwest. In the ten years to September 2026, hail of two inches or more was reported within 30 miles of Killeen on 14 days.

The strongest wind reports came from the north side of the city: a 76 mph gust at Fort Cavazos, about four miles north-northwest, on May 22, 2024, and gusts of 67 to 70 mph three miles north of Killeen on September 28, 2021, June 10, 2023 and August 1, 2025. Wind breaks shingle seal strips and lifts tabs without leaving a hole, and a claim for it has a time limit, so a free Roof Grade after a storm is worth having on paper; our storm damage repair page explains what happens next. If you are re-roofing, a Class 4 shingle, one that survives a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet under UL 2218, is usually a few hundred dollars more on a typical roof, and many Texas insurers discount it.

Roofs near the end of their first life, and a lot of rentals.

What the Census says about Killeen’s housing, and what that means on the roof.

By the Census Bureau’s count, Killeen has 65,809 housing units, half of them built in 1995 or later, and owners live in only 49% of them, a lower share than in most of the towns we serve. A house built in 1995 is at or past the end of an architectural shingle roof’s life by our cost guide, 25 to 30 years in Texas, so the newer half of the city is reaching its first replacement, and the older half has outlived at least one roof by the same numbers.

With so many homes rented, many Killeen roofs are a landlord’s decision. Our property manager program is set up for anyone looking after several homes, with scheduled inspections and one written report per property.

The usual leaks on roofs this age are the familiar ones from our roof repair page: pipe boots the sun has cracked, shingles a north wind has lifted, flashing at walls and chimneys, and valleys. Where the roof is worn out rather than damaged, a roof replacement is the time to fix the attic ventilation, which most shingle warranties depend on, and to weigh a Class 4 shingle against metal.

Killeen sets its own building rules, so whether a roof replacement inside the city needs a permit is the City of Killeen’s call, and Harker Heights, Copperas Cove and Temple each decide for themselves. We confirm the requirement for your address before the work is scheduled and file the permit when one is needed.

The prices we publish, and what an insurance job changes.

No new figures: each one is already on our cost guide or repair page.

Our cost guide is written from San Antonio-area jobs and starts from a 2,000 sq ft single-story home, which comes to roughly $8,000 to $13,000 in architectural shingle and $24,000 to $38,000 in standing seam or stone-coated steel; installed, shingle is $3.50 to $5.50 a square foot and metal $11 to $15. A Killeen house gets its own number, in writing, after the free Roof Grade. With Fort Cavazos next door, it is worth knowing that the guide also lists a military discount on eligible jobs.

Nearly all the Killeen roofs in our records were insurance jobs, and on those the number that matters most is your deductible. On most Texas policies the wind and hail deductible is a percentage of the amount the house is insured for, commonly 1% or 2%, and no contractor may legally waive or absorb it. Our deductible guide shows the arithmetic, and the repair prices show why a small job rarely needs a claim, since a pipe boot or a few wind-damaged shingles is typically $500 or less.

For a landlord with several houses or a homeowner with one, the free Roof Grade comes first: the attic, every slope and the measurements, then a written quote that lists every line, so two bids can be compared like for like.

How often does hail hit Killeen?

Since September 18, 2023, National Weather Service spotter reports show 3 days with hail of 1 inch or more within 10 miles of Killeen and 24 such days within 30 miles. The largest hail logged nearby was 1.25 in on May 1, 2025. Over ten years (since September 18, 2016) the count is 16 days. Hail damage is time-limited for an insurance claim, so a dated inspection after a storm matters; the free Roof Grade gives you the photos and the written finding.

How far is the Mammoth office from Killeen?

About 21 miles. Killeen is covered from the Temple office at 2004 S 57th Street, Temple, TX 76504; that team does the inspection and the work. Killeen sits in Bell County.

How old are the homes in Killeen?

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2019–2023) puts the median build year of homes in Killeen at 1995, across 65,809 housing units, 49% of them owner-occupied. Mammoth's own guide treats 18 to 20 years as the point to plan a replacement for an asphalt shingle roof, so a home from that era is worth a written inspection.
