Asphalt shingle roofing in San Antonio, with the Class 4 question answered honestly.

Shingle is what most San Antonio homes wear and what most of them will wear next. The decision is the tier: three-tab, architectural, or a Class 4 impact-rated shingle that many Texas insurers discount. We show all three side by side, priced, with the installation system that decides how long any of them last.

Three shingles, three prices, one installation system.

Three-tab

The budget shingle: flat, light, the shortest life. Right for a rental or a house you're selling; wrong for a roof you'll live under for 20 years.

Architectural

Two layers laminated for depth and shadow, roughly double the life of three-tab, and the look most north-side streets already have. The default for most homes.

Class 4 impact-rated

Architectural or designer shingles tested to UL 2218 Class 4. The one many Texas insurers discount, and the one we recommend before hail season.

We check the covenants before we quote.

HOAs care about color and profile. Bring the rules or we'll find them; the samples come to the house.

Book the grade

What the rating is, and what it isn't.

The test

UL 2218 drops a 2-inch steel ball on the shingle from 20 feet. Class 4 means no cracks on the back. It is the highest class.

The discount

Many Texas insurers reduce the premium for a Class 4 roof; the amount varies by carrier. We supply the certificate, your agent applies it.

The catch

Class 4 is a test, not a promise. A big enough hailstone will bruise any shingle. What the rating buys you is fewer claims, not none.

The math

The Class 4 upgrade usually costs a few hundred dollars on a typical roof and pays back in premium within a few years. We show the number on the quote.

The honest case for shingle.

  • Affordable. The lowest installed cost of any roof, with the widest color range.
  • Repairable. Wind lifts a slope? Replace the slope. Every color can be matched, even discontinued ones.
  • Shorter life. Around 20–30 years in Texas sun, less if the attic can't breathe. Plan for one replacement in a lifetime of ownership.
  • Weather-vulnerable. Hail bruises it and wind lifts it. Class 4 and the six-nail pattern narrow the gap; metal closes it.

What we do under the shingle that other roofers skip.

Mammoth is a the manufacturer Roofing since 2017: the credential requires five-plus years in business, insured crews and installers certified on the manufacturer's program. About 1% of roofers hold it.

Ice-and-water

Igloo Shield™ ice and water shield at every eave, valley and penetration; the places roofs actually leak.

Underlayment

Pelt Felt™ premium synthetic underlayment over the whole deck, not felt paper that tears in the wind before the shingles go on.

Six Stamp-Tight Nails®

Stamp-Tight Nails® (ring-shank roofing nails), six per shingle, in the nail line. The wind rating on the box assumes it.

Boots and ventilation

The Double Tusk™ Pipe Flashing System on every pipe, and intake-plus-exhaust ventilation sized to the attic.

Straight answers before you book.

Ask your local team
How long does an asphalt shingle roof last in San Antonio?

Typically 20 to 30 years, depending on the tier, the ventilation and the installation. Attics that can't breathe take years off any shingle.

Which shingle do you recommend?

For most homes an architectural shingle, and the Class 4 version if you'll be in the house through more than one hail season. We'll show the price difference on the quote.

Can you match my existing shingles for a repair?

Almost always, including discontinued colors. A repair uses the same six-nail pattern as a new roof.

Does the color matter for heat?

A little. Lighter colors reflect more; ventilation matters far more than color for attic temperature.

Is the inspection really free?

Yes — it's the same Roof Grade visit for every service. Attic first, 75–150 photos, the 32-point Hunter-Gatherer Report, a letter grade and a plain-English verdict. You get the written report whether you hire us or not.

Will you tell me if I don't need the work?

Yes. An A grade is a handshake and a date to look again. A B means a few small repairs, priced in the open, on a roof with years left in it. We'd rather be the roofer you call in ten years than the one who sold you a roof you didn't need.

What warranty comes with the work?

Repairs carry a workmanship warranty in writing on the invoice. Full replacements carry the Mammoth Two Tusk Limited Lifetime Warranty: our 10-year workmanship warranty on the installation, plus the manufacturer's lifetime material warranty on the materials, which means the life of that product on the manufacturer's written terms. Ask us for the warranty document and read it before you sign.
